GRIFTSTRAAT, UTRECHT

completed in April 2021

Griftstraat is a renovation project of a bathroom in a historical building from 1906 located in Utrecht, in a charming neighbourhood called Wittevrouwen.

The previous bathroom was designed by former owners of the house. They definitely found having a bath important, so they dedicated a representative spot next to the window for it. As a result of this design, the shower and the toilet space was very limited and cramped. The new owners wanted to create a more spacious bathroom in calm natural colours and materials. They resigned from the bath and replaced it with the big shower behind the modern glass panel. The  washbasin and the toilet have been moved to new places.

In the project the colour palette has been kept very neutral, emphasising the texture and structure of materials and furniture. One unique and relatively new material - Mortex has been used on shower walls. It is placed on walls (or floors!) like concrete. It is up to you how much pigment you mix in and which colour you get exactly. Thanks to that you can get one smooth structure on a surface without any joints. It is waterproof (after a proper treatment) and can be used in bathrooms without a doubt.
